  One Enchanted Evening
  April 24, 2012 7:30 PM
  April 24, 2012 8:30 PM
  Aquinas College Performing Arts Center
The highlight of this enchanted evening will be a gala concert of vocal and instrumental music from the worlds of opera, Broadway and jazz performed by Aquinas alumni Sara Jakubiak '02, Dr. Andy Fleser ’02, and Barbara Witham McCargar, chair of Aquinas College’s music department, in the college’s Performing Arts Center.

Sara Jakubiak ’02 is an emerging star in the opera world. She has been described by the New Haven Register as "a singer who is going places and should delight audiences for years to come." Tulsa World says she is possessed of a voice which is "rich and resonant, highly expressive and solid from top to bottom." In 2010-11, she made her New York City Opera lead role debut as Dede in the New York premiere of Leonard Bernstein's A Quiet Place.

Sara's 2011-12 season has included singing Eurydice with the Virginia Opera in Philip Glass' Orphée, and her March performance with the New York City Opera as Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. She also sang the part of Fiora in Montemezzi’s L’amore dei tre re at the Warsaw Beethoven Festival (CD release date TBD). Future engagements include debuts with the Boston Lyric Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Dr. Andrew Fleser ’00, pianist and vocal coach, has performed as a soloist and accompanist throughout the United States and Europe. A dedicated and active performer in the Minneapolis area, his interests and abilities transcend period and genre. Dedicated to the art of the interpretation of vocal music, Dr. Fleser is an avid opera and musical theatre coach, and has served on the faculties of Grand Valley State University, Hamline University (Saint Paul, Minn.), and the University of Minnesota. He is currently a full-time instructor of Music Theory at McNally Smith College of Music in Saint Paul, and is the Music Director of Valley Community Presbyterian Church in Golden Valley. Andrew has been heard on Interlochen Public Radio, Minnesota Public Radio, and most recently on American Public Media’s A Prairie Home Companion.

Barbara Witham McCargar, associate professor of music and chairperson of the Aquinas College music department, holds a Master of Music in Voice, with secondary emphasis in Opera, from the University of Michigan, with further study at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, and with Mr. Stanley Kolk.

In a long and varied career, she has given many recitals in concert halls and churches in addition to having been a featured singer in Grand Rapids Symphony Pops Concerts, with the Kalamazoo and Calvin College Oratorio Societies, the Grand Rapids Choir of Men and Boys, St. Cecilia Music Society (now SCM Center), the Ann Arbor Cantata Singers, at Lake Michigan College, Western Michigan University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the College Music Society.

She was a teacher of both Sara Jakubiak and Andrew Fleser.
