Emory Alumni Board President Laura Durudogan 85C will serve as emcee in an open discussion between President Jim Wagner and Melissa Maxcy Wade 72C 76G 96T 00T, Emory Maker of History and executive director of Emory’s nationally recognized debate team, the Barkley Forum. The evening will begin with a networking reception, followed by a short debate between Barkley Forum alumni and current debate team students. President Wagner and Texas native Melissa Maxcy Wade will then join in dialogue with the audience, with an emphasis on the meaning of debate, the value of civic and civil discourse, and the role a university such as Emory can play in creating a platform for difficult conversations. President Wagner will make a case that the college campus provides a unique arena for learning the practices of civility as we confront the most challenging issues of our time.
