Faith and Science: Conflict or Compatibility?

Ian McFarlandPopular culture, from blogs to movies to the evening news, tends to portray the relationship between faith and science as one of longstanding and unavoidable conflict. Closer examination of the work of scientists and theologians alike, however, suggests that the picture is much more complicated. Alongside those who see faith and science as irreconcilable, there are many who argue for the compatibility of religious and scientific claims – and still others who argue that faith and science are sufficiently different ways of approaching reality that it doesn't make sense to speak of agreement or disagreement between them! In a review of some of the leading proposals on the relationship between Christianity and natural science, Dr. Ian McFarland, Bishop Mack B. and Rose Y. Stokes Professor of Theology at the Candler School of Theology, will explore some of the issues at stake for Christians as they seek to engage faithfully with the claims of science.
