Honoring Dr. Marion Taylor’s Contributions to Martial Arts and Hampshire College

Dr. Marion Taylor, who has instructed students in the art of Shotokan Karate at Hampshire College for just under 40 years, has now retired. We will be celebrating and honoring his contributions to the field of martial arts and to Hampshire on October 19–20, 2013. Join us for a momentous weekend of martial arts practices, demonstrations, and a dinner reception.

Dr. Taylor holds senior ranks in multiple disciplines, Shotokan Karate, Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido (Japanese swordsmanship), and Heiki-Ryu Kyudo (Japanese archery). His dedication to these arts has earned him titles and responsibilities within each discipline. He is Eastern Regional Director of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), treasurer of North American San Shin Kai Iaido (NASSK), and one of the few individuals appointed senior instructor of Zenko Kyudo.

During his career as the director of martial arts at the College, Dr. Taylor organized and hosted annual martial-arts events, some dating as far back as 1976. In addition to traditional Japanese martial arts, he advocated for women’s self-defense against violence as an instructor of Rape Aggression Defense (RAD).

We invite everyone who wishes to honor Marion’s legacy to attend. The event will be part of Hampshire’s annual Family and Friends Weekend.
