Description:   IMPORTANT: Advance Registration must be postmarked by mail or submitted online by February 26, 2014, 11:59 PM. After this time, the only way to register is on-site at the conference. An additional $50 fee will apply for on-site registrations. Registration is for the full conference and cannot be prorated. Registration fee includes either a CD or paper proceeding and registration for both days, respective to the profession of the attendee.

Each wet lab/workshop is 3 CE credits. Registration includes a lunch and tour of Ryan Hospital - please identify below whether you will attend the lunch or tour. Please note: Penn Vet reserves the right to cancel any lab that does not meet minimum registrations by February 19, 2014. If a lab is canceled, registrants will be notified and all fees will be refunded.

Emergency and Critical Care Procedures - Veterinarians (conducted by Dr. Lori Waddell, Dr. Dana Clarke, Dr. Erica Reineke and Dr. Vince Thawley)

(This wet lab will cover life-saving procedures for patients presenting in critical situations. The following will be taught and then practiced on cadavers: thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis, thorocostomy tube placement, tracheostomy venous cut-downs for catheter placement, and multiple lumen catheter placement. Participants will work with cadavers in groups of three, with each group under the direction of a board certified ACVECC specialist. A handout reviewing the indications for the procedures and techniques will be provided. Space is limited to 12 registrants.)

Intra-Oral Nerve Blocks, Oral Examination and Dental Charting - Technicians and Veterinarians (conducted by Bonnie Miller, RDH, BS)

(Along with a review of oral/dental anatomy, participants in this wet lab will perform the steps included in the completion of a dental chart. Examination of the soft tissues of the head, neck and mouth will be performed along with periodontal disease assessment techniques to evaluate the supporting structures of the teeth. Regional anesthesia techniques will include the practice of mental, inferior alveolar, infra-orbital and maxillary nerve blocks. Space is limited to 8 registrants.)

Cytology Skills - Technicians and Veterinarians (conducted by Dr. Madhu Sirivelu-Prabhakar)

(Cytology is one of the most useful but underused diagnostic procedures. In this lab, you will improve your skills to interpret cytology samples by evaluating multiple cases representing common inflammatory and neoplastic diseases involving the skin, lymph nodes, body cavity effusions and various other organs. A brief presentation on smear preparation techniques, optimal sample submission and general approaches to evaluating a cytologic slide are included. Space is limited to 15 registrants.)

Dental Surgery - Tooth Extraction - Veterinarians (conducted by Dr. Alexander Reiter)

(This lab will provide hands-on training for closed extraction of single- and two-rooted teeth. Participants will also learn flap techniques for open extraction of canine and large multi-rooted teeth, including tension-free closure of extraction sites. Instrument choices, safe use of power equipment and proper bur selection will be reviewed. Space is limited to 8 registrants.)
